The Ezra Project

Equipping families, transforming communities, and sharing the Gospel through Grace Church near Huehuetenango, Guatemala.
“Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood.”
– Acts 20:28

For years, we’ve shared the impact of the Action Bible Program led by Nelson Morales, a ministry tool that continues to effectively reach children and families across Guatemala. But now, this program is just one part of a much broader ministry near Huehuetenango, known as Project Ezra.

The Vision Begins

Nelson, his wife, and their four children have spent the past two decades loving and serving the people in El Carpintero, faithfully following God’s call to build relationships and share the hope of Christ.

In 2007, the Morales family began ministering in eight villages, beginning with hosting Bible clubs focused on reaching children with the Gospel. Over time, the ministry expanded to include Vacation Bible School, reading clubs, school programs, and food distributions for families in need.

That same year, Nelson acquired a piece of land with a dream of establishing a ministry base, a place to disciple, serve, and one day host mission teams.

Grace Church: A Beacon of Hope

After years of prayer and perseverance, Grace Church is now a vibrant center for worship and the hub for evangelical outreach in El Carpintero. Families living across the nearby mountain ridges eagerly come to participate in diverse outreach programs that meet people where they are with the love of Christ.

The ministry base includes:

  • Mission team bunkhouses equipped with bathrooms & showers
  • A counseling office, kitchen, and classroom
  • Outdoor activity spaces and playgrounds

How Project Ezra is Transforming Lives

What began as a children’s Bible program has become a multifaceted ministry that is transforming an entire region. Each outreach reflects a unique way God is working through Nelson and his team:

Bible School

Every Saturday, more than 100 children gather at Grace Church for Bible lessons, worship, games, and crafts that bring Scripture to life.

Women’s Ministry

While the children attend Bible School, mothers come together for fellowship, prayer, and Gospel-centered conversation. The goal is to nurture the emotional and spiritual wellness of families.

Special Needs Support

Nelson’s team identifies families with children who have special needs, connecting them with psychological care, education, and medical resources.

Homeschool Program

The Ezra Project is launching a homeschool program for children beyond sixth grade, the local limit for education. Teachers will teach classes at Grace Church, expanding learning opportunities for students in the region.

Medical Clinics

A local physician has partnered with the ministry to provide families with well-child check-ups.

Mission Teams

Some of Paradise Bound’s mission teams now utilize Grace Church as an outpost while serving in Chiantla, building homes, working in schools, and sharing the Gospel side by side with Nelson’s family.

“The story that started it all—sharing God’s Word through The Action Bible.”
